                    The Referral Driven Practice- Mission-Chiropractic Style

On a recent evening I was reflecting about Mission-Chiropractic with its founder, Dr. Peter Morgan. We had shared a great moment together.

Here is the story, as I like to tell it:

The two of us were adjusting together in a room in the Casa de Oracion (the house of prayer). The house of prayer is a meeting place and a community-oriented center where we would all convene. We were using it as our head quarters and our clinic. The local citizens all knew that we; the great doctors from America would be there. In Puerto Plata we were treated like rock-stars. People lined up rushing to the cars when we arrived. The people were lined up; all kinds of people. Some were holding their X-rays, some holding their children, poor, and wealthy all standing together.

A well-dressed man presented to Peter after waiting for quite some time. He tried to explain in Spanish that he went to the Chiropractor in Santa Domingo and it made him worse. Peter tried to adjust him and he was resisting. He could not lift his left arm and they told him that he needed surgery. I asked him, “Who told you that you need surgery?” He replied, “ The surgeon” I then asked, do you think you need surgery and he looked at me and said, “What” I said,  “Well, when you want to go food shopping, where do you go? - The grocery store and when you want to go swimming you go to the ocean, right? Well guess what when you want surgery you go to the surgeon.” I then lifted him standing from his occiput and did it over and over and told him to come back to me every 30 minutes for 2 hours. I then told him to come back tomorrow. The next day he returns and tells me he is not going to get surgery and he then shows me his mother, his very old mother, and he says do what you did to me to her.

Sur Teodora is the nun that oversees the Casa de Oracion. She has an electric presence and warmth. On the second day there she approached me and asked me, “Fishel, tell me how this works?” Because she was going around and getting testimonials from all of the people that were returning for day two. Every person was bringing someone with them and sharing their success including her own sister, who had traveled from Santo Domingo with her X-rays and her diagnosis of disc compression and yada yada… She had the shooting leg pain, the whole deal. On day two she is clear. So now Sur Teodra who has been adjusted and even went on TV the night before and did an interview with Dr.’s Morgan and Herold. She still needs it explained. Fishel, tell me how this works?” Here is how I explained it. I said, “When someone comes to you and is poor and needs money, or needs food or wants to get their sick child well, what do you say?” I answered my own question by saying this, “You show them to him right? - pointing to a picture of Jesus Christ- well we all work with that same power. The power that puts life in you also heals you” She nods and smiles and says, “Oh- I see.”
